Ann Mary School is thrilled to announce the outstanding performance of Sanchit Batra, an 8th-grade student, at the 4th edition of the prestigious Indian Debating League (IDL) held on 30th November 2024 at IIT Delhi. Sanchit’s exceptional debating skills and intellectual abilities earned him a spot in the finals, making our school incredibly proud!
This year’s IDL theme, “Ethics in the Global Order: India Leading the Way”, saw over 1400 students from 20 states across India participating. The competition began with a series of online qualifiers, where participants were tasked with debating motions related to public welfare, veganism, and individual ethics. Based on his impressive performances, Sanchit was selected as part of the Uttarakhand team for the subsequent Inter-State matches.
As the Deputy Prime Minister of the Uttarakhand team, Sanchit competed in the Asian Parliamentary Debate format against formidable teams from Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh. The debates centered on societal ethics, with topics such as Philanthrocapitalism and Life Statistics providing a platform for Sanchit to showcase his critical thinking and eloquent speaking.
Out of 20 states, only 4 teams advanced to the semi-finals at IIT Delhi, including Uttarakhand, Dadra and Nagar, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Here, Sanchit took on the role of Deputy Prime Minister again, delivering compelling speeches, including a powerful reply speech in a debate against the motion “This House believes that India should actively collaborate with China on the One Belt One Road Initiative.” In the finals, he debated for the motion “This House believes that the decision for a country to go to war should be decided by an internal public vote/a referendum.”
After an intense 12 hours of heated discussions, quick rebuttals, and sharp points of information (POIs), Sanchit’s team emerged as the finalist, marking an incredible achievement for both him and Ann Mary School. This accomplishment highlights not only Sanchit’s individual talent but also the strength of his team and the guidance provided by the school to nurture such skills.
